Iceland
Route Planner
A 10-day expedition across Iceland's highlands - Landmannalaugar, Askja, Kerlingarfjöll, and Þórsmörk - by 4x4, driven by Alex Oberloh.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Ten days across Iceland's most remote and dramatic landscapes. Each day shows the route, F-road difficulty, and key landmarks.
Fly into KEF, clear customs, pick up the 4x4 rig from icerental4x4. Stock up on supplies in Reykjavík and get a good night's rest before heading into the highlands.
Reykjavík → Gullfoss
Classic Golden Circle loop: Þingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss waterfall. Stay overnight near Gullfoss to get an early start tomorrow.
Gullfoss → Landmannalaugar
Turn onto F-road 208 and head into the highlands. The road gets rough past the turnoff - engage 4H. Arrive at Landmannalaugar's geothermal oasis by evening. Soak in the hot springs under midnight sun.
Landmannalaugar
Full day hiking the northernmost section of the Laugavegur trail. Rhyolite mountains in explosive colors - red, yellow, green, blue. The landscape feels otherworldly.
Landmannalaugar → Þórsmörk
One of Iceland's most epic drives: F225 through the Fjallabak nature reserve, then F249 into Þórsmörk. Multiple river crossings - drop to 4L, scout the line, and cross steady. The valley is breathtaking.
Þórsmörk
Explore the valley carved between three glaciers: Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Tindfjallajökull. Hike to Valahnúkur for the panoramic view. Waterproofs mandatory - the valley traps weather.
Þórsmörk → Kerlingarfjöll
Backtrack to the ring road and take F35 (Kjölur route) north to Kerlingarfjöll. The road is moderate but the geothermal area is spectacular - steaming vents, rust-red hills, and snow patches in summer.
Kerlingarfjöll
Hike the Hveradalir geothermal area - a ridge of boiling mud pots, fumaroles, and steaming rainbow hillsides. Weather is notoriously fickle; expect wind and sudden rain even in August.
Kerlingarfjöll → Askja
Long drive day. F88 (Öskjuleið) is one of the most remote F-roads in Iceland - rough lava fields, no services, zero phone signal. Askja's crater lake Víti is the reward. Camp at Drekagil.
Askja → Reykjavík → KEF
Early start for the long drive back. F88 back to the ring road, then Route 1 to Reykjavík. Refuel, wash the rig, return to icerental4x4. Evening flight out of KEF.
